These sessions will introduce actors to Playback Theatre and allow them to see if this is a form of improvisation they would like to explore further. Previous experience in acting or dance would be helpful but is not required. Diversity in ethnicity, gender and age is welcome. The workshop/ audition sessions are free. No preparation or reservations are needed.
Playback is a form of improvisational theatre in which members of the audience are invited to share stories from their own lives—and the actors then play them back, as truthfully as possible, but transformed through imaginative retelling, using sound, words, movement, multicolored cloths and music. The results may be funny, poignant, moving, illuminating, healing. A major difference with other forms of improvisation: the actors never use audience contributions as the springboard for their own imaginative improvisations. The focus is always on listening carefully and recapturing the heart of the teller’s story.
Since 1997, Playback Theatre of Buffalo has performed in Western New York and beyond, for schools, churches, retreats, community centers, personal celebrations (e.g., birthday, anniversary, memorial service). Audiences have included Hospice, Stella Niagara Respite Retreats, the Alzheimer’s Association of WNY, VOICE/Buffalo. Actors are paid.
